Celtic band to perform Saturday at Walton Theatre

For the third time, world-renowned all-female Celtic band Cherish the Ladies will grace the Walton Theatre’s stage. Leader Joanie Madden said the group “adores” playing the Walton Theatre, partly because of the architecture, partly because of the accommodating warmth of the Music on the Delaware Group, and, she said, mostly because of the crowd.

Each member of the band grew up in homes loud with Irish and Celtic music, Madden said, absorbing the melodies through osmosis ‘whether they wanted to or not.’ Traditionally, playing instruments is passed from father to son but more and more it is from father to daughter, Madden said.

On the band’s most recent album, ‘Heart of the Home,’ the Catskill Mountains get special recognition in the song ‘Farewell to the Catskills.’ Madden said the tune popped in her head as she was leaving the East Durham Irish Festival, inspired by the mist reaching from the valley to the mountaintops.

‘Driving up through the mist was incredible, all purple mountains majesty,’ Madden recounted.

Madden said the band will play classic Christmas songs from the albums ‘Christmas in Ireland’ and ‘On Christmas Night,’ along with music from its newest album.
