Clarinetist Anat Cohen revels in the sounds of Brazil
By: Howard Reich

The most joyous moments of last year’s Chicago Jazz Festival came from the clarinet of Anat Cohen, whose soaring melodic lines and seemingly effortless virtuosity inspired robust ovations at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.

When Cohen returns to Chicago on Monday evening, she’ll be playing a decidedly more intimate venue ‘” City Winery ‘” and focusing on a musical genre of heightened importance to her.

For though Cohen excels in everything from ebullient Fats Waller to deeply lyrical originals, this time she’ll be collaborating with Trio Brasileiro in music from their new album, “Rosa dos Ventos” (“Wind Rose” or “Weather Vane”).

That Cohen is releasing this recording simultaneously with “Outra Coisa“ (“Another Thing”) ’” devoted to the compositions of Moacir Santos ‘” tells you something about her passion for music of Brazil.
