Irish group joins MSO for Christmas concert

Members of the all-female Irish-American group Cherish the Ladies may not have been classically trained.

And, few members of the Midland Symphony Orchestra likely grew up in households in which accordions, fiddles and singing in Irish were ever-present.

But they wove their different strands of musical tradition into a stunning seasonal celebration, ‘A Celtic Christmas,‘at the Midland Center for the Arts Saturday evening.

Irrepressible, Bronx-born Joanie Madden, leader of Cherish the Ladies since its formation as a single concert event more than 30 years ago, tossed out a cheery ‘Merry Christmas!’ as the band, new to most of the audience, walked onto the seasonally decorated stage.
