Musicians are called entertainers, sometimes craftsman, and too frequently they’re called artists.

Saxophonist Joshua Redman rightfully can be called a magician as well.

Not a fictional Harry Potter who saves the world from Voldemort with a swish and flick of his wand. Redman and the Joshua Redman Trio were in Grand Rapids to open St. Cecilia Music Center’s 2014-15 Jazz Series with an exciting performance in Royce Auditorium.

Though Redman was artist-in-residence for the Detroit Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend, it was his first-ever appearance in Grand Rapids. He saw a bit of downtown, spent some time in the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and commented on Grand Rapids’ civic pride.

“It’s been a joy and a privilege,” he said before his encore.
