Detroit Jazz Festival announces 2014 lineup and artist in residence
By: Mike Stratton

Even though the Detroit Jazz Festival has lost the sponsorship of Chrysler, it doesn’t look like they’ve lost their groove.

The DJF has announced over three dozen headlining acts that will percolate and pop across the four main stages in and around Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit on Labor Day Weekend (Friday August 29 – Monday, September 1).

Artist in Residence is saxophonist Joshua Redman. Son of musician Dewey Redman, Joshua graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harvard, and had been accepted to Yale Law School. However, he elected to take a year off to pursue a dream of music, a dream that continues to flourish to this day.

From the start, Redman was playing with exceptional musicians (Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins all played on his debut recording). His style is fluid and melodic, and he’s ranged from funk (Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band) to full frontal romanticism in his more recent recording with strings (‘Walking Shadows’). Wondering which incarnation Redman will exhibit for his own show, he’s also scheduled to perform with the inventive piano trio, The Bad Plus.
