MSO Pops, Cherish the Ladies show St. Patrick’s Day spirit

Nothing says “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” quite like an evening of Irish music and dance, particularly when the group performing is Cherish the Ladies and singer Cathie Ryan.

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Pops, led by guest conductor Michael Krajewski, joined forces Friday with the internationally acclaimed, all-female group for a high-energy evening of Irish music ‘” both traditional and recently written ‘” and dance.

Cherish the Ladies brought a seemingly effortless mastery of Irish music and style and wonderful foot-tapping tunes to the stage. Joanie Madden, the group’s founder and leader, and Ryan, a former member of the group, made music like two halves of a musical whole.

Madden played penny whistles and modern flute with a mix of absolute stylistic and technical control, a wistful folk sound and the musical sensibilities of a fine ballad singer.
