Caetano Veloso Named Guest Director of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival

July 6th, 2011
From: Nonesuch Journal

Caetano Veloso has been named the Guest Director of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival. The legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter has been invited to select a series of films to present at the festival, now in its 38th year, to be held over Labor Day weekend, September 2–5, 2011, in Telluride, Colorado. Among the festival’s past guest directors are Stephen Sondheim, Laurie Anderson, and Peter Sellars, who is now a permanent curator for the festival and recommended Veloso as Guest Director.

With over 100 film and television credits, Veloso is no stranger to the big and small screen. Veloso followed his 1999 Grammy Award-winning Nonesuch Recorsd release, Livro, with a soundtrack for the Carlos Diegues film Orfeu. In spring 2001, Veloso’s Omaggio a Federico e Giulietta—a live recording made in 1997 in Rimini in honor of two masters of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina—was released. In 2002, Veloso received worldwide recognition for his performance of “Cucurrucucú Paloma” in Pedro Almodóvar’s Academy Award-winning film Talk to Her, which can be heard on the 2003 Nonesuch release The Best of Caetano Veloso. For Veloso’s complete Nonesuch discography, visit the Nonesuch Store.

In keeping with Telluride Film Festival tradition, Veloso’s film selections, along with the rest of the Telluride lineup, will be kept secret until the festival’s Opening Day, September 2. For more information, visit telluridefilmfestival.org.

REVIEW: Devendra Banhart, Beck and Caetano Veloso at MOCA

November 17th, 2010
From the LA Times

Home in the Wild West: Devendra Banhart, Beck and Caetano Veloso at MOCA
By Margaret Wappler

The multimedia artist Doug Aitken, who envisioned the Artist’s Museum Happening at MOCA on Saturday night, had a singular mission: to describe and then harness the energy of the West, for one fleeting evening.

The trio of musicians who performed as the evening’s central entertainment scraped at the spirit of this ineffable and wild territory: Devendra Banhart, filling in the role of scruffy bohemian; Beck, the sun-kissed folkie who’s drawn inspiration from trashy strip-malls; and the Brazilian former exile and Tropicalismo poet, Caetano Veloso.

Before the musical interlude, the mood in the tent set up outside the museum was already sparking. Yet, it was also curiously mellow, a California combination if there ever was one. Bejeweled diners picked at their delicate heirloom lettuce salads underneath white sculptures designed by Silver Lake architect Barbara Bestor. With black draping covering the walls, the room was dark and softly lit. Wherever the eye roamed, the contradictions of this particular slice of Los Angeles could be caught in the complex interchange between the nipped-and-tucked patrons of the arts, and the networking gypsy artists who need them.

On a stage in the center of the room, Banhart was the first musician to perform, playing “At the Hop” from his 2004 album, “Nino Rojo.” Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and cleanly shaved, Banhart relied on his vibrato to color in the song’s child-like rhymes. It was an openhearted start, effectively setting the mood for Beck’s and Veloso’s wistful music.

Caetano Veloso to Perform with Beck and Devandra Banhart

October 28th, 2010
From the LA Times

Folk rock is happening at this year’s MOCA gala, with Beck, Veloso, Banhart
By Mike Boehm

At its 2009 annual benefit gala, dubbed “MOCA New,” L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art and celebrity-obsessed artist and event creator Francesco Vezzoli went for the hottest new thing they could find for the evening’s musical element –- and came up with Lady Gaga in headwear by Frank Gehry and a mask by Vezzoli, debuting her ballad “Speechless” while playing a pink piano that Damien Hirst had festooned with butterflies.

For its successor, on Nov. 13, the talent pulled in by this year’s gala creator, L.A.-based artist Doug Aitken, is a bit more time-tested. MOCA announced Tuesday that Aitken has enlisted chameleonic rocker Beck (pictured), a leader of the L.A. scene since 1993, when “Loser” became a folk-rap hit; Brazilian singer-songwriter-political activist Caetano Veloso, who helped launch Brazil’s hybrid Tropicalismo musical movement in the late 1960s; and Venezuelan-American performer Devendra Banhart, a sometime collaborator of Beck’s whom The Times has described as “among a recent wave of cosmic young folk players…stretching the definition of folk rock for a new century.”

Aitken and his musical allies will generate a work called “WE,” whose aim is a “cultural ambush” (Aitken’s term) of music and choreography “that will attempt to break the barriers of the stage and empower the evening through the arts.” There’s no word on whether Beck, Veloso and Banhart will play artist-decorated guitars that can be auctioned to benefit MOCA, as Lady Gaga’s Hirstified piano was last year, fetching $450,000.

Nonesuch to Release Veloso's "Zii e Zie" in March

February 24th, 2010
(From Nonesuch) As revelers “laissez les bons temps roulez” for Mardi Gras and samba through the streets of Rio for Carnival, Nonesuch marks the occasion by introducing Brazilian legend Caetano Veloso’s 41st album, Zii e Zie, now available for pre-order in the Nonesuch Store . The record, released last year in South America and Europe, has already earned Veloso a 2009 Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album.

The Times of London’s Clive Davis recently declared, “The Brazilian master remains in a league of his own,” and gave the new album four stars. The Guardian gives the album four stars as well, with reviewer Robin Denselow calling the songs “intimate and surprising, with sudden bursts of electric guitar transforming the easy-going ‘Falso Leblon,’ and handclaps and funk guitar lines matched against the laid-back vocals on ‘A Cor Amarela.’ Best of all, there’s the half-spoken ‘A Base de Guantánamo,’ which sounds like a classic and angry protest song even if you can’t speak Portuguese.”

Veloso returns to the United States in April for six performances, with dates in New York City, Washington, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami.

Charlie Rose Interviews Caetano Veloso

May 11th, 2004
Listen to the interview here

Veloso is one of the most popular and influential Brazilian composers and singers.

Veloso began his career singing bossa nova. With such musical collaborators Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Chico Buarque, and Os Mutantes, and a strong influence of the later work of The Beatles, Veloso developed tropicalismo, which fused Brazilian pop with rock and roll and avant garde music resulting in a more international, psychedelic, and socially aware sound. Veloso’s politically active stance, unapologetically leftist, earned him the enmity of Brazil’s military dictatorship which ruled until 1985. His songs were frequently censored, and some were banned.

In the 1980s, Veloso’s popularity outside Brazil grew, especially in Israel, Portugal, France and Africa. In the United States, his records produced by Arto Lindsay helped gain him a larger audience. By 2004, he was one of the most respected and prolific international pop stars, with more than fifty recordings available, including songs in soundtracks of movies such as Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Eros,” Pedro Almodovar’s “Hable con Ella” (Talk to Her), and “Frida.” In 2002 Veloso published an account of his early years and the Tropicalia movement, “Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.” His first all-English CD was “A Foreign Sound” (2004), which covers Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” and compositions from the “Great American Songbook.” His album, “Cê,” was released in the U.S. by Nonesuch Records in January 2007.
