INTERVIEW: Esperanza Spalding, "Miriam Makeba Is My Queen"

< Back

Tuesday March 15, 2011

Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding will be in the Mother City for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, which runs on March 25 and 26 and has a pretty impressive line-up: Earth, Wind & Fire, Dave Ledbetter and Youssou N’Dour are among those joining the talented American bassist and singer.

We caught up with the artist pre-event and asked her five burning questions.

In the 15th century, Portuguese sailors dubbed Cape Town “Cabo da Boa Esperança” (Cape of Good Hope). With your name, Esperanza, also being the Spanish word for hope, what is it that you hope for in 2011?

I hope for continuation of the momentum that’s been building all around the world from everyday people standing up and sacrificing convenience and comfort for the rights and freedom of their people. For me personally, I hope for time and inspiration for creating beautiful music!

You cite a number of international influences on your musical style – are there any musicians from Africa that you are inspired by?

Miriam Makeba is my queen! I listen to her religiously, and love watching YouTube videos of her performances over the years. Her poise and grace and, of course, phenomenal voice are a continual source of inspiration. I also love Dobet Gnahoré. She and her whole band are so incredible! Lionel Loueke is also one of my favourite musicians, not only to listen to, but also to make music with.
