Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding enthralls during a sold-out show at Oberlin College

“Love me, love me, love me / Say you do,” Esperanza Spalding implored.
It was an offer you couldn’t refuse during the lithe singer-bassist’s sold-out performance Wednesday night amid the cozily sanctified confines of Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel.
Last month, this Portland, Oregon, native became the first jazz musician to win the Grammy Award for best new artist, to the chagrin of Justin Bieber fans.
Spalding’s magical concert proved that the honor was richly deserved. Not even that prodigious ’fro of hers could eclipse her prodigious talent. And unlike your average pop sensation, she gave every indication of having a long and fascinating career ahead of her.
