Achieving stardom includes hard work, dedication, courage
By: Charlie Hall
Singing talent doesn’t guarantee stardom. Mix in hard work, dedication and even the courage to simply go for your dream.
That’s the case with Grammy-winning singer Kathy Mattea, who brings her show to New Bern Friday night as a fundraiser for the New Bern Historical Society.
She was a sophomore at West Virginia University and playing in a band in 1978 when she came to a crossroads in her life.
One of the band members, a song-writer, decided to move to Nashville. He invited her to join him pursuing the musical dream.
“I had this sinking feeling in my belly because I knew at that moment that for the rest of my life I could not pretend I had not had the opportunity,” she recalled during a recent telephone interview. “After thinking about it for awhile, I just closed my eyes one day and called my parents said ‘I’m going to do it. I’m going to go to Nashville and be a songwriter and see what I can do.’”
