Grammy nominee Esperanza Spalding to play The Egg
By: R.J. Deluke
The rise of bassist, composer and singer Esperanza Spalding has been meteoric. From humble beginnings in Portland, Ore., she was raised by a single parent in a rough neighborhood.
She began playing violin at 5, but turned to jazz at a time dominated by pop, hip hop, country and rock. Her style carries pieces of funk and pop and things in between.
She’s up for a best new artist Grammy next month in a category that covers all genres. She has played twice at the White House, and in 2009 was asked by President Obama to perform at the Nobel Prize ceremony and concert in Oslo, Norway.
And she’s all of 25 years old.
