Bay Area Talent Cracks National Year’s Best Lists
By: Brian McCoy
The week between Christmas and New Year’s may be a quiet one generally speaking in this country but for music journalists it marks the best time to release their end-of-year lists.
The nation’s leading jazz critics all seem to agree one on thing: that is, that Jason Moran’s latest, “Ten,” is the top release of 2010. Other favorites include Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden’s “Jasmine,” Steve Coleman and Five Elements’ “Harvesting Semblances and Affinities” and Geri Allen’s “Flying Toward the Sound.”
The Bay Area scene came in for some recognition. Critic Geoffrey Hines tapped the latest SFJAZZ Collective album as among the year’s best while the Village Voice dubbed bassist-composer Lisa Mezzacappa’s disc, “What Is Known,” as the nation’s top debut effort. There also was due acclaim for Vijay Iyer’s “Solo,” which was recorded at the Bay Area’s own OTR studio.
