Kathy Mattea’s Country Music Style Strikes A Balance

Kathy Mattea is one of those rare country artists who has managed to succeed on the commercial level while retaining strong links to the traditional music that first captured her heart.
Although Mattea, a native of Cross Lanes, W.Va., began her musical studies with classical voice training in junior high, she fell in love with folk music soon after. By the time she was in college, Mattea was performing regularly with an area bluegrass band, and she decided to make the move to Nashville while still in her teens.
For several years, Mattea paid her dues on the competitive Nashville scene before signing with Mercury Records in 1983, releasing her debut album the next year.
