Bringing the world together, online and onstage
By: Siddhartha Mitter
Take an age-old, idealistic impulse: to save the world. Add the technological wonders of globalization. Spark the combination with a clever idea, and you get innovations that are revolutionizing modern philanthropy.
That’s the principle at work in Playing for Change, an ingenious venture that brings musicians together — virtually and in real life — erasing barriers between street performers and pop stars while raising funds to start music schools in poor communities worldwide.
The project’s best-known output has been a series of multi-million-view YouTube hits in which musicians in far-flung locations — India, Kenya, Congo, Peru, New Orleans, and many more — don headphones and add their track, using mobile recording gear, to a global remake of a famous song. It began with “Stand By Me’’ two years ago, followed by other pop standards like Bob Marley’s “One Love.’’
