LIVE REVIEW Esperanza Spalding "woos" Luxembourg Philharmonie

< Back

Friday October 22, 2010

Esperanza Spalding is one of the world’s rising young jazz stars, having been personally selected by President Barack Obama to play at his Nobel Award dinner, as well as playing with Stevie Wonder at his White House concert. She released her latest album ‘Chamber Music Society’ a few months ago, and Luxembourg was on her itinerary as part of her European tour promoting the album.

Upon entering the auditorium at the Philharmonie, the first thing I noticed about the stage arrangement before the concert started, beyond the instruments, was an odd little space down left (on the front to the right of the audience) onstage, with a red velvet chair, arrangement of white flowers, a white frilly lamp, and a small table with a bottle of red wine perched on it. When Esperanza herself walked in as her string section began to play an introduction, she briefly sat down for a little as she poured and sipped some wine before taking off her shoes (she almost always plays barefoot) and jacket, picking up her instrument, and launching into her rendition of the William Blake poem ‘Little Fly’, featuring some lovely double stop sequences on her bass.
