Esperanza Spalding on Jazz, Google and Playing with Prince
By Christopher John Farley
When Esperanza Spalding performed at the White House last year, she was introduced by the announcer as “the brightest young star on the jazz horizon.” Since that show, the jazz bassist’s profile has only risen, with a performance on the Prince tribute at the recent BET Awards and her recent selection as the top rising star in the acoustic bass category in the 58th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll. It’s her third straight year winning the category.
“She has such a fresh sound and brings this amazing technique that she’s honed at a young age,” says DownBeat associate editor Aaron Cohen. He says that Spalding will be featured on the cover of the September issue of DownBeat.
The 25-year-old Spalding is set to release a new classically-tinged album next month entitled “Chamber Music Society,” which features drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, pianist Leo Genovese and a guest appearance by Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento.
