Just one of the boys in the band
Famed saxophonist Joshua Redman finds he likes the group dynamics
By Adrian Chamberlain
Joshua Redman has always led the combos he has brought to Victoria. But the saxophonist insists this time he’s just one of the boys in the band.
Redman plays the TD Victoria International JazzFest as a member of the James Farm quartet. The band — including pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland — made its debut last year at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
“It’s a real band. It’s not my band. It’s not a leader and sideman kind of thing. We’re really trying to approach it with a band philosophy … I’ve never quite been part of a band like this,” Redman said recently from his home in Berkeley, Calif.
