Donna Grantis ‘” of whom Prince once said ‘can whup every man on guitar, bar none’ ‘” has released a pair of new songs, ‘Trashformer’ and ‘Violetta’ with a high-profile guest musician, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. The two instrumental tracks are available on streaming sites and as a limited-edition 7-inch single on McCready’s vinyl label HockeyTalkter Records. Grantis has a full album, Diamonds and Dynamite, due out early next year via eOne Music, a jazz-oriented label that’s also home to the Bad Plus.

After Prince’s death, Grantis and her husband tried living in Los Angeles and New York before settling in Minneapolis, where she formed the jazz-fusion band that shares her name. They made their live debut in August 2017 at the Dakota, the same venue where 3rdEyeGirl played their first gig.

‘It has been an incredible honor to collaborate with Mike on these songs,’ Grantis said in a news release. ‘His playing has always been a huge inspiration, from the time I first picked up the guitar through to composing ‘Trashformer’ with this collaboration in mind. Mike adds a glorious solo on the outro of ‘Trashformer’ that is absolutely electrifying and ambient sound effects throughout the b-side ‘Violetta’ that are truly sublime. It was so much fun making this music.’
