Jazzmeia Horn makes A Social Call
By: Paul Cavalconte

This year, bandleader Jazzmeia Horn was the youngest Jazz Vocal Grammy Award nominee in two decades. After winning top prizes at the Sarah Vaughan and Thelonious Monk competitions, she recorded her first album, A Social Call. The title is a call to action, for ‘social responsibility, to know your role in your community.’ On this debut album, Jazzmeia pays tribute to her ancestors in the jazz community, with songs made famous by Betty Carter and Billie Holiday. She also includes songs for her daughter, her grandmother, and for her mother, like the socially-conscious “People Make the World Go Round” written by Thom Bell for the 1970s Philadelphia soul group The Stylistics.
