Brad Mehldau: After Bach ‘” ‘Beautifully Formed Solo Album’

The body of this beautifully formed solo piano album presents four preludes and one fugue from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier alongside five Mehldau compositions that were inspired by them.

Mehldau interprets the Bach pieces with measured emotions, steady tempos and an even-handed technique that leaves the architectural purity of Bach’s writing intact. Mehldau’s originals then develop fragments of these Bach compositions into an alternate musical universe in which dense textures are juxtaposed with Spartan blues and bass lines stride purposefully across the keyboard. And it is here that the pianist’s prowess as an improviser takes wing.
