Country star and Cross Lanes native Kathy Mattea isn’t sure how many times she’s been a guest on “Mountain Stage.”

“Between 10 and 20,” she guessed. “Maybe more than 20?”

Actually, according to “Mountain Stage,” it’s 19, but who’s counting?

Regardless of how many times she’s been a guest, Sunday will mark Mattea’s first turn as guest host, when the singer steps into the shoes of show host and co-founder Larry Groce for a performance at the Culture Center Theater that includes appearances by Seamus Egan Project, Cheryl Wheeler, Kenny White and more.

“I’m kind of excited, kind of nervous,” Mattea said. “I want to do a good job. It’s going to be an interesting challenge and I think it’s going to be fun. I have always been a big public radio fan,” she said. “My husband is from Minneapolis. So, I knew all about ‘A Prairie Home Companion.’”

Mattea said the invitation was too good to turn down.

“It was like ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ but with hillbillies,” she laughed.

Mattea told them she’d love to be part of it.
