Violinist Performs Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald
By: Annie Alleman

A violinist at the top of her game takes on the works of a jazz giant when Regina Carter presents “Simply Ella” at North Central College in Naperville.

“I’ve been a huge fan of Ella since I was a kid,” [Carter] said. “There were so many records that we had and so much music playing in our house when I was growing up, the first time I put on Ella was just a record laying around, basically. I put it on and I was immediately drawn to her.

[…] When I get a sense of the hall and then get a feeling of what I want to start with, or the band gets a feeling of what they want to start with, we go from there,” she said. “And when we get out onstage, you get a vibe from the audience and it kind of dictates in my head (what songs to play). We do some other tunes of Ella’s that I haven’t recorded and we also do some non-Ella tunes. I have a lot of repertoire and I like to mix it up. But they will get a lot of Ella.”
