THIS was the most extraordinary jazz concert Sydney has witnessed in years. Unlike some of his peers, Wayne Shorter has not let his reputation rest on past glories alone. Like his boss from the 1960s, Miles Davis, he has continued to ask, ‘‘What if?’‘
Shorter was asking that question when he formed Weather Report in 1970 which, in its earliest incarnation, was primarily about collective improvisation as an alternative to the enshrined format of soloing. His extraordinary current quartet continues that exploration in a spirit of unconstrained adventure, taking the music to heights that only the great bands reach. They daubed with abstract impressionism long suites of pieces, within which wisps of familiar tunes appeared and disappeared, as if swallowed by a mist…
