The Artistry of Jazzmeia Horn: Winner of the 2015 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, Texas-born chanteuse Jazzmeia Horn has definitively earned the title of ‘Rising Star.’ Dressed in a striking African ensemble, Jazzmeia started scatting and soaring from the moment she stepped on stage. With pianist Victor Gould, bassist Barry Stephenson, drummer Henry Conerway III, and saxophonist Patrick Bartley, Jazzmeia performed ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.’ Since the front of the stage had turned into an impromptu dance floor, Horn admired ‘the beautiful swing dancers,’ adding, ‘That’s what this music is about. It makes you want to do something positive, something good.’ On ‘My Funny Valentine,’ she encouraged the audience to sing along, and although Jazzmeia hit some notes that most people couldn’t reach, she assured them that they sounded beautiful. Her rendition was so impressive that people gave her a standing ovation in the middle of the song! The set continued with ‘Afro Blue’ and finished with a stirring ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing.’
