Yesterday, the annual “I Love Mountains” rally was held at the Kentucky Statehouse to protest mountaintop removal mining. Kathy Mattea spoke about the impact of coal mining:
People tucked in the hills and hollows of Appalachia near strip mines “are living in their own personal hell,” she said, with “black water running from their faucets” and dust so persistent that it gets inside freezers.
“If the prosperity of some is built on the exploitation of others, everyone loses,” she said.
