Jazz stars returning to San Diego

Mehldau, likely the leading jazz pianist to emerge in the past 20 years, appears to be a likely successor to Keith Jarrett ‘” less stylistically than as a keyboard master who can enthrall audiences whether playing with a band or sans any accompanists. He is also one of the few pianists in his realm who is as comfortable transforming songs by Radiohead, Elliot Smith, Fiona Apple, Massive Attack and Stereolab as he is reinventing jazz classics or performing his own songs.

His trio features Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. While most Athenaeum-produced concerts at TSRI draw capacity or near-capacity audiences, Mehldau’s is likely to sell out in advance.
