Montreal International Jazz Festival 2013: The Bad Plus at Gesù Theatre; July 1, 2013

The dry-witted Anderson may have said it during a funny singing interlude ‘” in the same song he directed everyone to the merch table ‘” but he’s not wrong: The Bad Plus are festival mainstays, and thanks to their universally pleasing style ‘” technically proficient enough for the jazz heads, yet groovy and catchy enough for casual fans ‘” the Minnesota trio will likely never overstay its welcome.

Anderson, drummer Dave King and pianist Ethan Iverson played two encores and looked dead tired at the end, but if not for the Gesù lights coming on just after midnight, the crowd might have spurred them on for another song.

Playing mostly material from their 2012 release, Made Possible, the trio impressed with their inventive playing techniques, which are as much about physicality as they are about achieving interesting sounds. King was especially fun to watch, elongating and shortening his arm movements for sonic purposes, but also at one point shaking his drum kit and alternating between different kinds of drum sticks.
