Jazz packs economic punch
By: Zwelakhe Shangase
South Africans love music and jazz is no exception, judging by the feet that make their way annually to events like the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in Joburg, the latter taking place this weekend.
Both have reached milestones since their inception.
Not only did the Cape festival pull in more than 33000 visitors this year, it celebrated 13 years of entertaining crowds, which coincides with the Joburg celebration of 13 years of its Jazz festival.
Both festivals have an important economic and social impact on the country.
This year, The Joy of Jazz is set to draw in younger music lovers and it boasts a line-up of performers like local Thandiswa Mazwai and Musa Manzini, Lizz Wright and Grace Kelly from the US and Shanti Lo from Botswana.
The festival seeks to take jazz to various communities to reach fans like the elderly and disabled and mentor young people from high schools and universities too.
With the overall success of these two major events, how is the community or the South African economy benefiting – besides the fun and music?
Joy of Jazz has, over the years, invested in a campaign that promotes live entertainment called The Road to Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, which precedes the main events and more than 5000 music lovers attend these shows.
This then creates enough hype and combines the economic impact of the build-up campaign and the main event is felt in various parts of Gauteng.
