Astounding surprises mark DeJohnette tribute show
By: Timothy Malcolm

BEARSVILLE — Midway through Terri Lyne Carrington’s set, her blistering band hearing a roar from the Bearsville Theater audience Sunday night, she looked up and saw Jack DeJohnette standing beside her. Her teacher, fellow drummer and living legend, handed Carrington a towel.

Wipe it off, pro, you’re hot tonight.

Beside Carrington was Esperanza Spalding, the 27-year-old bass wunkerkind who beat Justin Bieber for a Grammy. A surprise guest to this shindig celebrating DeJohnette’s 70th birthday, Spalding grinned and giggled gallantly all night long, probably awestruck by this audacious crew playing around her. There was vocal gymnast Bobby McFerrin, who clapped and cooed, and the boisterous Joe Lovano parading about his spot, inserting thunderous statements with his saxophone before bowing out laughing.

This crew, celebrating the work of an Ulster County percussionist who has played with Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett and just about any other jazz musician at the top of the world, engulfed the Bearsville Sunday with some of the sweatiest, hottest, most ferociously fevered jazz that has or will ever come to the Hudson Valley. Simply put, it was a once-in-a-lifetime show.

Teri Roiger and John Menegon, respectively a local singer and bassist with attractive resumes, threw DeJohnette this 70th birthday party through their JazzStock organization, which aims to bring local jazz awareness partly through live shows. It’s likely impossible to top this one, which was preceded by a buffet dinner catered by and benefiting the Queens Galley, an organization close to DeJohnette
