Spreading a message of sweet diversity
By: David Steinberg

f you count the number of singers in the all-female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, it adds up to five. But there’s a sixth, unsung person on stage with them – the sign-language interpreter.

Carol Maillard, one of the founding members of the ensemble, said the interpreter is important to Sweet Honey in the Rock.

“It has a lot of purposes, benefits,” Maillard said in a phone interview.

“First of all, 99 percent of Sweet Honey’s songs have a message – about life, a person’s experiences, political, social messages or messages from the heart. Those messages should be accessible to everybody, whether they hear it or not.”
