Review: Oscar Castro-Neves, Live at the Blue Note Tokyo
By: Esther Callens
There are very few live recordings that deliver the experience of being in the actual audience. However, one that offers this and more is composer/guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves’s –Live At Blue Note Tokyo. Presenting some spirited Brazilian music, Live At Blue Note Tokyo is quite the collection.
This remarkable concert was recorded live in Japan in one of the world’s best jazz clubs. In fact, the Blue Note Tokyo is iconic just as its cousin, the famous Blue Note New York. It is an exceptional venue, thus makes this a memorable recording.
Oscar Castro-Neves considers this project endearing. He states “first – it was done in Tokyo. Japan is a land that never ceases to mesmerize and educate me with its culture, its history, and its people. There is, I feel, a strong connection between Japanese and Brazilian melodies, and I believe that part of this connection is the embedded emotion that both convey.” In addition to the excellent location, he also states, “It brings together old and new friendships, Airto Moreira and Leila Pinheiro”, the two special guests who happen to be featured on Live At Blue Note Tokyo.
The 14 selections are a combination of Oscar Castro-Neves originals as well as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Roberto Menescal and a number of various other composers. Known as one of the founding fathers of Bossa Nova, Castro-Neves’s latest is a look at some great compositions. The set opens with “Ela E Carioca” a lively selection that sets the tone for the entire CD.
