Sweet Honey In The Rock’s Nina, Odetta & Miriam tribute comes to The Blue Note

Having entered their third decade of performances at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 4, the historic African-American a cappella group Sweet Honey In The Rock will return to New York with a three-night debut engagement at Greenwich Village jazz club The Blue Note, Dec. 12-14.

Sweet Honey In The Rock—Remembering Nina, Odetta And Miriam…With A Special Salute To Abbey Lincoln reprises Sweet Honey’s reprises their April performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where they premiered the tribute to Nina Simone, Odetta and Miriam Makeba—with instrumental backing by a jazz trio. At The Blue Note, Sweet Honey will likewise be accompanied by musical director/keyboardist Stacey Wade, bassist Parker McAllister and drummer Jovol Bell.

Sweet Honey is comprised of vocalists Ysaye Maria Barnwell, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil, Carol Maillard and Louise Robinson, and sign language interpreter Shirley Childress Saxton. The Blue Note shows are part of the club’s 30th Anniversary Jazz Festival.

“We are 38-years-old and appreciate opportunities to stretch and grow,” says Barnwell of the venerable group, which is steeped in the music of African-American cultural tradition and the social activism of the civil rights era. “We wanted to pay tribute to Odetta, Miriam and Nina, and then Abbey died and we wanted to include her as well.”
