Kathy Mattea Sings in Roanoke, Highlights Environmental Issues
By: Joe Dashiell

Grammy award winner Kathy Mattea is in Roanoke for a concert at the Jefferson Center Friday night. Thursday morning, her audience was a group of high school students and her focus was finding common ground on environmental protection and other challenging issues.

Mattea entertained the audience with songs from her most recent recording “Coal,” a project that drew upon her West Virginia roots. Mattea shared her concerns about the impact of mining, and she spoke of finding a better way to bring people together on polarizing issues.

“I’m really concerned with how we have discussions when we don’t agree,” Mattea told News7 in an interview. “And at a certain point I realized that’s a worthwhile thing to talk about, to point out.” “I think it’s really important for us to listen to each other and to honor each other even when we don’t agree with each other,” she said.
