Esperanza Spalding brings jazz artistry to Modlin Center
By: Tammie Smith
Nine months ago it was “Esperanza who?” when jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding beat teen heartthrob Justin Bieber and rapper Drake to win a Grammy award for best new artist.
That quickly turned to Esperanza wow! as newcomers to her work agreed with critics who praised her talent, authenticity and style.
Spalding, 26, was not a new artist, but her CD “Chamber Music Society” released in 2010 propelled her career to a new level and introduced her to many new listeners, thus her entry into the “new artist” category.
Spalding is scheduled to perform 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at a sold-out show at the Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond.
She still isn’t a household name. But with full-length, glowing feature articles and a grueling summer and fall tour schedule, she is getting there.
