Mehldau makes Triskel ‘homecoming’ of sorts
By: Brian Hayes Curtin
A real treat is in store for music fans this week with the appearance of world-renowned jazz pianist Brad Mehldau at the Triskel. The virtuoso last played in Cork two years ago, but his appearance at the Triskel owes more to a personal connection he feels for the centre, having played the old Triskel many years ago.
Having initially made his name with a series of trio albums titled ‘The Art of the Trio’, of which there five, he has now released a number of acclaimed solo recordings. His appearance at the Triskel will be a solo show.
His last album ‘Live in Mariac’ is his third solo piano outing and showcases his trademark dense playing style. On it he brought his usual mix of quirky covers, performing Nick Drake’s ‘Things Behind the Sun’, Kurt Cobain’s ‘Lithium’ and the jazz standard ‘My Favourite Things’.
He has attracted a sizeable following over the years and has managed to attract many fans outside of the jazz world, largely through his propensity for non-jazz covers, especially through Radiohead covers. His live performances tend to singular, intense experiences.
It should be a nice precursor to the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival which comes along soon after.
Brad Mehldau plays the Triskel, Christchurch on Tuesday, 13 September at 8pm and tickets are €35 and €33.
