Idan Raichel Teams Up With India.Arie

American soul will meet Israeli soul this summer when the new album by Grammy Award winning India.Arie is released featuring our own world music poster boy Idan Raichel.

Raichel needs no introduction to people familiar with Israeli music. The dreadlocked singer/songwriter and his revolving group of multinational Israeli musicians known as the Idan Raichel Project reach as far afield as Ethiopia, Yemen and Latin American for their sound. And over the course of three albums since 2002, he’s become known worldwide as the main purveyor of Israeli multiculturalism.

.Arie heard of Raichel when she was vacationing in Israel and according to the Associated Press, asked some local music aficionados who the most influential political singer-songwriter was in town.

“Everybody said, ‘Idan Raichel, Idan Raichel — same name all the time,’” she recalled. “So I just went to his little apartment, I heard his music and was like, ‘That’s my music!’”

Arie has sold over 3.3 million records on U.S. and 10 million worldwide, winning four Grammy Awards and received 18 nominations. Her most recent album incorporated a world music sound which she’s developing further on Open Door which will be released in the summer.

According to AP, it will feature songs in Hebrew and English, though India.Arie doesn’t know Hebrew, explaining that Raichel “teaches me the translation.” The two first performed together in December at Nobel Peace concert in honor of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo in Oslo, Norway. And since then, they’ve held concerts in Los Angeles and Atlanta to promote the upcoming CD, with an international tour in the works once the album is out.
