From The Examiner
Interview with Jason Moran, pianist
By: Eugene Chan
Over the last decade NY-native Moran and his trio “The Bandwagon” has developed a reputation for being one of the leading Jazz ensembles of its time. In a 2009 “New York Magazine” article NEA Jazz Master Marian McPartland said of Moran, “Moran is one of the the best, most original young pianists today.” In 2010, the MacArthur Foundation awarded Moran one of its so-called “genius” grants.
Now Moran and “The Bandwagon” will be one of three ensembles performing a FREE concert this Friday 7:30 pm at the Prospect Park Bandshell as part of the “Celebrate Brooklyn” festival on a bill that includes “The Bad Plus” and trumpeter Roy Hargrove’s Quintet.
Q1: How did this idea to play with/ “against” “The Bad Plus” come about? Is this kind of project a 1-off, or will you be sprinkling more of this into your schedule in the future?
A1: We’ve been discussing the idea of us performing with each other for a couple of years. We’ve done numerous double bills together and have mutual admiration for each other. As two piano trios that have existed for 10 or more years, I thought it would be a good time to double up on stage to celebrate.
