Indaba Music Launches Global Collaborative Contest

Indaba Music – the online musical collaboration community – is offering musicians around the globe an opportunity to collaborate on the song “Groove in G” from international music collective Playing for Change’s latest album PFC2: Songs Around the World (Hear Music/Concord). Playing For Change, recently featured on The Today Show, is a celebrated project based on the vision of filmmaker Mark Johnson who travels the globe connecting musicians through a unique recording process that layers individual recordings into seamlessly mixed songs. In the spirit of this project, Indaba Music and Playing For Change are challenging musicians around the world to add their voice to the mix and create their own version of the song “Groove in G.”

The individual tracks to the original “Groove in G” are online and viewable here. Submissions must be posted to the Indaba site by 5pm July 7th. The winning submission, which will be chosen by Playing For Change and announced August 11th will receive $1,000 plus a Playing For Change bundle featuring a T-shirt and the new CD/DVD set PFC 2: Songs Around the World. Two runners up will also receive a Playing For Change T-shirt and CD/DVD bundle. Seven additional runners-up, chosen by popular vote, will receive Playing For Change’s CD/DVD.

Producer and founder Mark Johnson says of “Groove in G”: “This is an improvised desert blues based on riffs created by the guys in Tinariwen; there’s also a trace of Latin rock and Afrobeat. It’s a new global kind of groove. One of the inspirations of this album came from Tinariwen. There’s a saying in their culture that a divided people will lose their way. PFC sees a united people finding their way. We want to portray people coming together, one heart and one song at a time.”

Released May 31st by Hear Music / Concord Music Group, PFC2: Songs Around the World is Playing For Change’s second studio album which was recorded over 10 months and includes nearly 150 musicians from 25 countries. The result is a stunning collection of music unifying a truly global collection of artists in one voice.
