Pianist Jason Moran, bassist Meshell Ndegeocello mash up jazz greats, modern beats at Harlem Stage
By: Greg Thomas
When pianist Jason Moran and bassist and vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello take the stage this weekend at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, the music of Fats Waller will mash with modern dance beats for an uptown party.
As part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, the legendary club Small’s Paradise also will be remembered.
“Part of my folklore of a Small’s Paradise is that you go in and it feels like the black Cheers,” says Moran, a Harlem resident.
“You go in there, and you know each other’s history to continue to have a conversation. We’re trying to create a kind of social atmosphere with fewer strangers, and where more are on the same wavelength. And all are coming to dance, too.”
