A Star-Studded Retirement Party
By: Mark Shanahan & Meredith Goldstein
Members of Boston’s arts community gathered at the Paramount Theatre on Monday night for “Mad About Marty,’’ a tribute to retiring Celebrity Series of Boston executive director Martha H. Jones, who’s been with the organization for 25 years. The night in Jones’s honor included entertainment by Celebrity Series favorites such as pianist Wu Han, violinist Philip Setzer, and cellist David Finckel, who performed as a trio; Alvin Ailey dancers; and a surprise guest, Grammy-winning bluegrass and folk songstress Kathy Mattea, who performed the favorites “Where’ve You Been’’ and “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses.’’ The night’s emcee was “What Makes It Great?’’ host Rob Kapilow, who teased Jones about her love for the Red Sox. VIPs in the house included longtime Alvin Ailey artistic director Judith Jamison, choreographer Mark Morris, Talbots CEO Arnold Zetcher and wife Ellen, former Celebrity Series executive director Walter Pierce, Vertex Pharmaceuticals founder and Celebrity Series board chair Joshua Boger with wife Amy, and Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers co-owner Steven Belkin and wife Joan.
