Six years ago, when Israeli keyboardist and composer Idan Raichel was an unknown musician working in a home studio in his parent’s basement in a small city near Tel Aviv, he never imagined that his experiments fusing Israeli pop music with Middle Eastern, African, Indian and other global sounds would ever result in the biggest-selling records in Israeli history and propel him to a role as a major figure in the international global music scene. The Idan Raichel Project’s explosive rise saw the multicultural collaborative break sales records in Israel and perform across the globe to rapturous crowds in some of the world’s most prestigious venues. Raichel continues to expand upon the success of the ever-evolving project, and is currently collaborating on outside recordings with India.Arie and Vieux Farka Touré.

The rapturous response from the audience… was unlike anything witnessed in recent memory. “World music” cross-cultural mixing pots can often come off bland and boring, crushed under the weight of their good intentions and liberal politics. Raichel’s new equation succeeds because it prioritizes creative new music, with the message of peace flowing from the sound.
LA Times
Striking a range of musical, cultural and implicitly political notes, the Idan Raichel Project combines music from Israel, Ethiopia and other countries in that vicinity. Last night at Lisner Auditorium, the 10-piece group also sometimes ventured into rap, Afro-pop and Celtic jigs. Under it all, though, was a cinematic trip-hop style that recalled Portishead.
Washington Post
This one-man Middle East peace accord makes music that is an ambitioius celebration of multicultural diversity. The ethnic elements are cleverly rewired with modern grooves to create an ambient journey that thrillingly bridges the traditioinal and the modern.
The Times (London, UK)
