Wayne Shorter Symphony

Commissions to compose, score and perform symphonic pieces for Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and La Jolla Music Society led Wayne to develop pieces ranging from a wind quintet to a full symphonic program, which have been performed throughout the US and Europe, including performances with the Lyon Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic. The symphonic repertoire takes a new look at the jazz icons catalog of historical compositions.

Wayne Shorter 80th Birthday Celebration

One of the most influential saxophonists and composers in the pantheon of modern music, let alone jazz, Wayne Shorter will celebrate his 80th terrestrial year in 2013. Regarded as a pioneer since his emergence in the 1950’s, Wayne Shorter’s trajectory has restlessly embodied continual exploration and unencumbered momentum. An entire generation of musicians and fans alike, see and hear Shorter as a humble master who has created a timeless vocabulary – equally vital as it is unbound.

The only fitting celebration for his unparalleled accomplishments is to bring a few friends together who will carry forth this inspiring legacy by celebrating the future of music.

The Wayne Shorter Quartet, featuring Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade, since coming together in 2001, has single-handedly put a spotlight on the possibilities of spirited ensemble playing and inspired collective composition.

“Shorter’s quartet celebrates humanity’s hope for harmony without top-down rules, and it’s probably the most skillful mutually attuned and fearlessly adventurous small jazz group on the planet.” Guardian (UK)

“Sound Prints”- Joe Lovano / Dave Douglas Quintet
In 2010 the ever-searching Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas formed a quintet (Lawrence Fields, Linda Oh, Joey Barron) to explore the vast range of Shorter’s compositional contributions. Utilizing the 1966 composition “Footprints” as the launching pad, Sound Prints pays the highest tribute possible by showcasing a deeply personalized, nimble, and flat-out fierce quintet.

ACS featuring Ravi Coltrane
Ground-breaking contributions abound with this trio of musicians whose lives and music intertwine with the maestro and his songs. Each have performed with Wayne, made recordings of his compositions and collaborated in creation of music together. The performance in this event focus on the middle period of Wayne’s music with the grooves of Weather Report and forward thinking songs from the 80’s and 90’s

This three part celebration can be produced as a single event or arranged on different stages.
