SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK...A TRIBUTE

Grammy Award nominated a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock unveils their most adventurous live presentation yet, an album made in appreciation of other great female artists entitled SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK…A TRIBUTE. Featuring a seasoned jazz trio, Sweet Honey In The Rock honors the legacies of distinct and out-spoken musical icons Odetta, Miriam Makeba, and Abbey Lincoln in an incredible program with a special segment dedicated to each artist and new arrangements of some of Sweet Honey In The Rock’s classic and most popular recordings. Premiered at Jazz at Lincoln Center in a spectacular set of performances, the live recording will be released as an album in February 2013, including songs along the lines of Odetta’s “Freedom Suite,” and “Midnight Special,” Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata,” and “Sabou Maya,” and Abbey Lincoln’s “A Turtle’s Dream,” and “Down Here Below.”

SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK: AFFIRMATIONS

Recently premiered with the National Symphony, Affirmations For A New World is a collaborative symphonic and choral work between composer William Banfield and the internationally renowned vocal performing ensemble, Sweet Honey In The Rock. Combining the stunning vocal prowess of Sweet Honey In The Rock with the contemporary orchestral pallet of Banfield, Affirmations explores several hopeful, engaging, and relevant themes, highlighted by each movement’s title: “A Higher Note,” “Dreams,” “Awakening,” “Discourse on Change,” and “Yes.” The program finds inspiration rooted in the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions of spirituals, blues, gospel, and jazz, creating an equally balanced fusion of soulful harmonies, intricate rhythms, and modern orchestration.

Internationally renowned a capella ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock presents a one-of-a-kind seasonal concert, celebrating music from many faiths and religions of the globe through stunning vocal prowess rooted in the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions. With American spirituals, Latin, Chinese, African, and Hebrew influences, this program honors the holiday spirit from Christmas to Kwanzaa. The repertoire includes traditional holiday standards such as “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” “This Little Light of Mine,” and more, all blended with new holiday favorites.

Rooted in a deeply held commitment to create music out of the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions, Grammy Award winning SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK possesses a stunning vocal prowess that captures the complex sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. Sweet Honey’s collective voice, occasionally accompanied by hand percussion instruments, produces a sound filled with soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms. The 2013-2014 season marks the 40th Anniversary of SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK.
