Acclaimed composer, violinist, and singer Jenny Scheinman presents a distinct collection of contemporary American music with the simultaneous release of her self-titled vocal debut and fifth instrumental album, Crossing The Field (both recordings due out on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, KOCH Records). Revealing her haunting singing voice for the first time, Scheinman finds herself within the storied tradition of strong, plainspoken female country singers who bring reality and unadorned honesty to hard-won songs of love and life. Jenny Scheinman combines original, autobiographical contemporary folk compositions together with stunning renditions of old-time country and blues selections by the likes of Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, Mississippi John Hurt, and several others. Jenny Scheinman was produced and recorded to eight-track analog tape by notable singer-songwriter/guitarist Tony Scherr in his Brooklyn home studio. On her most ambitious and extravagant instrumental album to date, Crossing The Field, the lush and cinematic arrangements highlight Scheinman alongside longtime collaborator and Grammy Award-winning guitarist Bill Frisell, jazz-piano extraordinaire Jason Moran (Blue Note), and a string orchestra led by founding members of the string quartet Brooklyn Rider, who are known for their ongoing work in Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project. Since moving to New York City in 1999, Scheinman has found herself working alongside such lauded artists as Norah Jones, Bill Frisell, Lucinda Williams, Madeleine Peyroux, Marc Ribot and countless others. For the past five years (2003-2007), Scheinman has taken the #1 Rising Star Violinist title in the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll and has been listed as one of their Top Ten Overall Violinists. Her fourth instrumental release, 12 Songs, was named by the New York Times (Ben Ratliff) as one of the Top Ten Albums of 2005, and she's recently garnered numerous high-profile arranging credits (i.e. Lucinda Williams's West, Bono's A Dying Sailor to His Shipmates). On Tuesday, May 27, 2008, Jenny Scheinman will be available online and in retail outlets nationwide, and Crossing The Field will initially be available both online and on vinyl (hard copy CDs will be in stores this fall, release date TBD).
